King George III holds the record for living longer and reigning longer than any other English or British king. (Two queens lived and reigned for longer, Victoria and Elizabeth II.) He was the first king of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland; the Acts of Union were passed by the Irish and British parliaments in 1800 and took effect on 1 January 1801.
George III's most notable accomplishment was the loss of the American colonies and the subsequent emergence of the United States. The American crisis could possibly have been avoided or at least defused had George been less inflexible. A similar inflexibility later led him to oppose Catholic emancipation. On the positive side, his reign saw the British agricultural revolution and notable advances in the sciences, developments that he actively encouraged.
